Rapid Chess Match 26 - 28 October 2007
Mukachevo (the Ukraine)
Mukachevo, a small town located in the western Ukraine , was the venue of an attractive chess event at the end of October 2007: Vassily
Ivanchuk (the Ukraine ) and Peter Leko ( Hungary ) competed in a Rapid Chess Match twelve games.
The number one of Hungary against the
number one of the Ukraine – the two neighbouring countries sent their best to the duel in Mukachevo.
The competition was originated by the initiative of Josef Resch, who looked forward to the battle between these two top stars. UEP president
Resch celebrated his 50th birthday this year – and on the occasion of this anniversary the idea of an extraordinary chess event was implemented.
The duel of the two players from “top ten” came up to the high expectations. During three days Ivanchuk and Leko had been presenting an
enthralling battle. Ivanchuk got off to a flying start: the Ukrainian surprised with novelties in his play, and after first two days he had gained two
victories.
But Leko once again proved his abilities of a fighter: in the final day the Hungarian equalized the match by winning two games with the
white pieces.
So, the match was decided in “overtime”: The first blitz game ended in a draw. But Ivanchuk won the second game – and finally
became the winner of an exciting duel in Mukachevo.
Final score:
Rapid Chess (12 games): Vassily Ivanchuk – Peter Leko 6 : 6
Play-off (Blitz, 2 games ): Vassily Ivanchuk – Peter Leko 1,5 : 0,5
